How to Market Your Pharmacy or Clinic in the UK: Authority, Not Just Advertising
Everybody wants to open a clinic. A weight-loss service, an ADHD clinic, a private prescribing service through a pharmacy. And the question I always come back with is the one nobody wants to answer: where are the customers coming from? You can set up the best clinic in the world — if nobody trusts you, nobody walks in. So here’s the honest version of how you market a pharmacy or a clinic in the UK. It starts with understanding one distinction almost everyone gets wrong: advertising is not marketing.
The honest summary
- Advertising gets awareness; authority gets customers. Ads bring people to the door — being trusted is why they come in.
- Become an authority in your niche: helpful articles, videos and real reviews on your website (your front door) and across TikTok, Instagram and every channel.
- Use AI. It builds your website, marketing plan and content faster and cheaper than most people realise — I’m surprised how few use it.
- You cannot legally advertise prescription-only medicines to the public. Talk about the service and safe use — not “Wegovy injections”.
- Go grassroots: partner with a local gym, contact local businesses, run free patient webinars, build small awareness hubs where patients already are.
Advertising vs marketing: know the difference
Let me draw the line clearly, because everything else hangs off it. Advertising is how you get in front of people: search-engine ads, Google Ads, TikTok and Instagram ads, Facebook, even the local newspaper. It buys you awareness and traffic. And here’s the thing — that’s the easy part. Anyone with a budget can advertise. You put money in, eyeballs come out.
The hard part — the part that actually determines whether you succeed — is what happens next. Someone lands on your page. There are a dozen other people offering exactly what you offer. Why should they trust you? That question is the whole game. Answering it is what I mean by marketing, and the answer is always the same word: authority.
| Advertising | Marketing / Authority | |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Buys awareness and traffic. | Builds trust so people choose you. |
| Difficulty | The easy part — money in, eyeballs out. | The real work — earned over months. |
| Tools | Google/search ads, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, local press. | Helpful articles, videos, real reviews, free webinars, a great experience. |
| Timescale | Instant — switch it on, traffic arrives. | Compounds — 3–6 months of SEO, longer to become known. |
| When the money stops | The traffic stops with it. | The reputation keeps working for you. |
| The test | “How many people saw it?” | “Am I demonstrating authority and driving traffic to my site?” |
Become the authority in your niche
Pick your space — weight loss, ADHD, dermatology, whatever it is — and set out to become the person people trust in it. That’s the whole strategy. Not throwing money at ads and hoping. Becoming genuinely, visibly trustworthy in your area.
Your website is your front door. And the good news is you no longer need to spend thousands of pounds building one — more on that in a moment. What matters is what’s on it. On your site you demonstrate authority: write genuinely helpful articles about your domain and about the conditions and medicines involved, publish videos like the ones I make, and collect real reviews and testimonials from patients who’ve actually used your service. That’s how trust is built.
Then do exactly the same thing on TikTok, on Instagram, across all your social channels. Build a following. Build trust over time. And run every single post through one simple test:
If a post doesn’t do at least one of those two things, rethink it. Every article, every video, every reel is either building your authority or pointing people back to your front door. Ideally both.
Use AI — I’m amazed how few of you do
Here’s something that genuinely surprises me: how few people setting up clinics are using AI. It will save you an enormous amount of time and money, and make you far more efficient. You can use it to generate a website, to draft a marketing plan, to produce a steady stream of content. The old excuse — “a good website costs thousands” — simply isn’t true any more. The barrier has collapsed.
If you want to understand how AI can do this for you — from building the website to writing the content to planning the campaign — that’s exactly what we teach. My training courses are at medlrn.co.uk, and if you’d rather have someone build the site or the plan with you, get in touch.
Grassroots beats big budgets
You don’t need a war chest. Some of the most effective marketing I’ve ever done cost almost nothing — it was local, human and grassroots. For a weight-loss service especially, going local is fantastic.
- Partner with a local gym. Sit there, talk about weight loss, explain how the different medicines and approaches actually work. You’re standing exactly where your patients already are.
- Get in touch with local businesses. A quick conversation with the right local employer or shop can open a door no ad ever will.
- Run free patient webinars. When I was marketing my own clinic I went into every local Facebook group and delivered free webinars — on weight loss, on understanding different conditions — before it was a common thing to do. Patients came away trusting me, and then they came to my pharmacy. It’s not rocket science.
- Build small awareness hubs. Find where your patients already gather and put a helpful presence there. You don’t chase patients; you go to where they are.
Give people a brilliant experience
Once someone visits — your page, your pharmacy, your clinic — make it a memorable experience. This is what turns a one-off customer into someone who comes back and tells other people.
Think about why people buy Ferraris. They’re fast, yes — but plenty of cars are fast. People pay for the experience. Or take Apple: you might not even like it, but you cannot deny it’s an experience — everything connected, watch to phone to laptop, one seamless ecosystem. That’s what people actually pay a premium for. So ask yourself what experience you’re offering. Get that right and you genuinely can’t go wrong.
The SEO reality: this takes months
A website isn’t enough on its own — you also have to rank on Google, and I’ll be straight with you about the timescale. It typically takes three to six months of consistent, genuinely good content, and often longer, before you climb the rankings. That content has to be built around the keywords and terms real patients actually type in, and published steadily rather than in one burst.
SEO is a compounding asset, not a switch. This is exactly why the authority approach and the SEO approach are the same approach — every helpful article you write to demonstrate expertise is also the content that earns your ranking. Start early, keep going, and don’t expect it overnight.
Governance underpins all of it
None of this marketing means anything if the service behind it isn’t safe and compliant. Before you promote a thing, have your policies and procedures in place — that’s the foundation the whole reputation stands on. I’ve written the detail separately: start with how to set up an online prescribing service and the governance it needs, and the service-specific guides on setting up a weight-loss clinic and setting up an ADHD clinic. Marketing brings people in; governance is what makes sure you can safely look after them once they arrive — and it protects the authority you’ve worked so hard to build.
Putting it together
So here’s the playbook. Don’t fall for the “spend thousands and hope” trap. Advertise to get awareness by all means — but understand that’s the easy 10%. Then do the real work: become the authority in your niche with helpful content, videos and real reviews on your website and every social channel. Use AI to do it faster and cheaper. Stay the right side of the MHRA rules on advertising medicines. Go grassroots — gyms, local businesses, free webinars, awareness hubs. Give every patient a brilliant experience. Be patient with SEO. And build it all on solid governance. Get those right and you won’t be asking where the customers come from — they’ll be coming to you. Done well, that’s also one of the strongest income streams a pharmacy can build.
If you want a hand with any of it — a website built, AI training, a marketing plan — that’s what Medlrn is for. If you’d like me to mentor you through it personally, get in touch. And for the clinical and governance infrastructure behind the service, Clinickly handles exactly that.
Frequently asked questions
What’s the difference between advertising and marketing for a clinic?
Advertising is how you get awareness and traffic — Google Ads, search-engine ads, TikTok and Instagram ads, Facebook, the local newspaper. That’s the easy part; anyone with a budget can do it. Marketing is the harder, more valuable work: becoming an authority people actually trust so that when they land on your page or walk through your door, they choose you over everyone else doing the same thing. Advertising brings people to the door; authority is why they come in.
How do I become an authority in my niche?
Treat your website as your front door and prove your expertise on it: write genuinely helpful articles about your domain and the conditions you treat, publish videos, and collect real patient reviews and testimonials. Do the same across TikTok, Instagram and your other social channels to build a following and trust over time. A useful test for every single post is simple: am I demonstrating authority, and am I driving traffic back to my site? If a post doesn’t do at least one of those, rethink it.
Can I advertise weight-loss injections or other prescription-only medicines?
No. Under UK law and the MHRA rules you cannot advertise prescription-only medicines (POMs) to the public — so you must not promote “Wegovy injections” or “weight-loss jabs” by name to attract customers. What you can do is talk about the service itself, and educate people about using and administering injections safely and their side effects, within the legal framework. The intention has to be to build authority and inform, not to advertise the drug. If in doubt, check the current MHRA guidance and take advice.
How long does it take to rank on Google?
Longer than most people hope. Ranking well on Google usually takes three to six months of consistent, genuinely good content — and often longer. It has to be built around the keywords and terms real patients actually search for, and published steadily rather than in one burst. SEO is a compounding asset, not a switch you flick, so start early and keep going.
Do I really need to spend thousands on a website?
No. You no longer need to spend thousands to get a professional website, and this is where AI has changed the game — you can generate a solid website, a marketing plan and a lot of your content quickly and cheaply. A website is only as good as the service behind it and the authority you put on it, so put your budget into helpful content, real reviews and a great patient experience rather than an expensive brochure that says nothing.
